This 233-page book contains eight generations of the descendants of Gonzalo de Reyna and Catalina de la Garza. The first mention of Gonzalo in El Nuevo Reyno de Leon (Nuevo Leon) was on the baptism of his son Domingo de Reyna dated the 2nd of March 1670 in Monterrey. Gonzalo is considered the progenitor of the Reyna surname in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Texas. This book contains information from the late 1600s through the early 1900s.
It is unknown if Gonzalo was the first Reyna to arrive in El Nuevo Reyno de Leon and in the 1653 will of Mateo de Arredondo there appears an Agustin de Reina as a witness. I find no other mentions of him or any descendants of his. It is possible that he was related to Gonzalo but there is no proof.
Very little is known about Gonzalo since he did not leave many records in the civil and protocolo archives in Monterrey. In 1689 he is mentioned in the will of Nicolas de Quintanilla and it is indicated that Nicolas owed “15 quintales” of lead to Gonzalo. A "quintal de plomo" translates to a quintal of lead, which was a standard colonial unit of weight equivalent to 100 Spanish pounds (libras Castellanas). During the 1600's lead was a highly critical commodity in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Because of the booming silver mining sector, vast quantities of lead were required for the smelting process to isolate and refine silver from the ore. Lead was also heavily regulated and transported in large bulk quantities measured by the quintal. From this we can only assume that he was involved in mining or provided mining supplies to local miners.
To date, I have been able to document 2,804 descendants for Gonzalo and Catalina. This book only contains 1813 of them which make up the first eight generations of their descendants.
