Leal

This 522-page book contains Eight generations of Leal focusing on the descendants of Antonio Leal de Leon and Juana Josefa Gonzalez Hidalgo. Antonio was born about 1645 in El Nuevo Reino de Leon (Nuevo Leon). He is considered to be the progenitor of the Leal surname in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Texas. This book contains information from the 1640s through the early 1900s.

The parents of Antonio Leal are Alonso de Leon and Juana Josefa Gonzalez. Unlike his brothers and sisters he adopted the Leal surname from his maternal grandfather. He married Josefa Gonzalez Hidalgo in about the early 1670s. She is the daughter of Bernabe Gonzalez Hidalgo and Leonor Gutierrez Garcia.

The parents of Antonio came from Huichapan in the present state of Hidalgo. I mention this since in 1635, another Antonio Leal along with his brothers came to settle in what is now Nuevo Leon and they also came from Huichapan. It is unknow if they left any descendants with the surname Leal, but it is very possible that these Leal were brothers of Antonio’s mother Juana.

Antonio was a military man and participated in many, along with his brother Alonso de Leon, campaigns of pacification starting in the 1660s. He was also the high mayor of Cadereyta in 1683.
