Fernandez

This 452-page book contains four generations of the descendants of Gonzalo Fernandez de Castro and Maria Rodriguez. The first mention of Gonzalo in El Nuevo Reyno de Leon (Nuevo Leon) was as a witness on a record dated the 1st of August 1611. Gonzalo is considered the progenitor of the Fernandez surname in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Texas. This book contains information from the early 1600s through the middle of the 1700s.

Gonzalo Fernandez de Castro was born in Llerena, a settlement within the jurisdiction of Nueva Galicia, in what is today, Zacatecas. During the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Nueva Galicia formed part of the northern frontier of New Spain, a region shaped by Spanish settlement, mining activity, and the gradual expansion of colonial society. Communities in this area were often connected through migration to newer frontier settlements, including the province of Nuevo León.

He was the son of Juan Fernandez de Castro and Mayor de Renteria, and through his marriage to Maria Rodríguez he became linked to one of the early families of Monterrey. Maria Rodríguez was born about 1598 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, the daughter of Diego Rodriguez and Sebastiana de Treviño Quintanilla. Monterrey itself had been permanently founded in 1596 and, by the early 17th century, was still a developing settlement where families established ranches, households, and local networks that sustained the colony. Gonzalo was one of the wealthiest men in El Nuevo Reino de Leon in the early 1600s.

To date, I have been able to document 63,922 descendants for Gonzalo Fernandez de Castro and Maria Rodriguez. This book only contains 3,190 of them which make up the first four generations of their descendants.
